Ice Plug / Pipe Freeze
Non-intrusive, cost-effective pipeline maintenance using liquid nitrogen — zero drain-down, minimal downtime, and no system disruption.
Ice Plug / Pipe Freeze Service
Cryonet has developed state-of-the-art PipeFreeze services for your most challenging pipeline maintenance and repair. Pipe freezing is a non-intrusive, cost-effective, and quick method to perform pipeline maintenance and modifications without draining the system.
Using liquid nitrogen, the problem area in the pipeline or vessel is frozen with the product inside to form a solid plug. This allows for very little drain-down or refill and, in many cases, no system downtime. Once the work is complete, the plug is thawed and the line is fully restored to operation.
How Pipe Freezing Works
Pipe freezing uses liquid nitrogen in the controlled formation of a solid ice plug inside the pipeline using cryogenic jacketing equipment and techniques.
Apply Liquid Nitrogen
Cryogenic jacketing equipment is fitted around the target section of the pipeline. Liquid nitrogen at −196°C is applied to begin extracting heat from the product inside the pipe.
Form the Ice Plug
Heat is continually drawn from the product until its temperature falls below the freeze point, forming a solid and reliable ice plug capable of withstanding differential pressures.
Repair & Restore
With the plug in place, repairs, valve installations, or modifications are carried out safely. Once complete, the LN₂ is removed and the plug thaws — restoring full flow.
Where We Apply It
Pipe freezing can be used to perform routine and complex system modifications across a range of industrial sectors and pipe materials.
