Deep Cryogenic Treatment: Permanent Gains at −190°C (−310°F)
A one-time, irreversible process that transforms the molecular structure of tools, dies and components — increasing wear resistance, toughness and dimensional stability without changing hardness.
What Is Deep Cryogenic Treatment
The word "Cryogenics" comes from two Greek words — 'CRYO' meaning 'cold' and 'GENICS' meaning 'born of'. Material is treated below −190°C (−310°F) using time/temperature profiles that vary by material composition, wall thickness and total mass. The material is held at this temperature in phased steps, then brought back up to room temperature.
Dimensions are not changed, but surfaces are smoothed at a level not visible to the eye — a matte finish does not become glossy. Metal parts become tougher but less brittle due to their more uniform structure, and show improved corrosion resistance from this slight surface smoothing.
Items only need to be processed once — this is a permanent, irreversible process. Everything from cutting tools to drills to blades benefits every time they're reground or resharpened, and typically need less material removed at each resurfacing.
- 1 Soft retained Austenite is almost completely (up to 99.7%) converted to tough Martensite structure.
- 2 Existing carbide molecules are evenly dispersed throughout the material.
- 3 Many small carbide particles form between the existing larger particles — castings are stress relieved and molecular alignment is enhanced.
Benefits & Features of Cryogenic Processing
- Increased wear resistance
- Increased toughness and reduced brittleness, without an increase in hardness
- Increase in impact resistance and fatigue limit
- More uniform molecular structure
- Greater heat dissipation lets the material withstand higher temperatures
- Closer machining tolerances with less scrap, distortion and stress
- Less material removal needed on resharpening or regrinding
- Lower cost through longer-lasting equipment, reduced maintenance and downtime
- A solid treatment, not a surface treatment — the entire mass is affected, so the effect is retained even after regrinding and resharpening
- Improved corrosion resistance, with no change in hardness
- Dimensional variation of about 5 to 10 microns, depending on prior heat treatment
- Works on any coated part — TiN (titanium-nitride), TiAlN, and similar coatings
